I suggest using the Canadian friendliness to your advantage. Approach them saying something like “Hey, it’s been a while since we met. I’m Sam, the N7 geek that was at the last Mass Effect Party! What’s your favorite Mass Effect Mission?” At least you will be able to distinguish the posers after that.
