the way its been explained to me is, that its more a joke than a theory, as Francisco said, its about quantum mechanics, and that stuff does not really aply to everything on existence, so, what my teacher said is, that schrodinger was trying to show how stupid it is to use probabilities that way when you are not talking about particles or any other thing that could in theory be in more than one state at the same time, so the cat is actually either dead or alive, you can only guess wich one is before you open the box, and then you are actually certain about it… there is another webcomic that actually shows a cientist using cats as particles to disprove the theory, and it ends up with a lot of dead cats smashed… but i dont remember the name…(its a 1page comic)

One of the ideas behind QM is that where something, e.g. a particle, can be in more than one “state”, it’s in all the states it can be in simultaneously when it’s unobserved. However, if some entity, e.g. a human or a machine, looks at it it’s forced to adopt one of those states. The probability of which state you would find it in would depend on the underlying QM of the situation.

Going back to S. cat:

You set it in a situation, that relies in QM in a sealed box. You calculate when there’s a 50% chance of it being alive (you are making the assumption that the state of the cat is a QM property). Before you open the box it’s in 2 QM states simultaneously: 50% alive and 50% dead. After you open the box, it would either be 100% alive or 100% dead.

If the cat is a talking cat, when you interrogate it, it would probably not be aware that it was in a combination state.

The basic theory is stating that if two possibilities are plausible, then one can only state that the two possibilities are simultaneously true until one of the possibilities can be disproven. Like Aliens. Until we are able to scan each star in the universe and any other universe there may be to the molecular level, like an x-ray of stars and planets, we cannot disprove the possibility that there are aliens in outer space.

Schrödinger’s cat is so friggin complicated that whenever I try to even wrap my brain around it, I’ll read something else that completely changes the meaning to it and I’d be stuck at square one. This is why I went into art and not physics!!

I am kinda curious on why I shouldn’t get you started… yet a little nervous to ask as it might upset you…

Augh, don’t get me started on that cat…
